The total fertility rate (TFR) of Filipino women aged 15 to 49 years dropped from 2.7 children per woman in 2017 to 1.9 children per woman in 2022 (Chart 1), based on preliminary results of the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The PSA defines TFR as "the average number of children a woman would have by the end of her childbearing years if she bore children at the current age-specific fertility rates." With the lower TFR, the country is already below the replacement fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman. The United Nation defines replacement fertility rate as the average number of children born per woman at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next, without migration.
