The Philippines enjoys a large working–age population, projected to grow to more than 70 million by 2020. However, this segment would have to be highly educated and gainfully employed if they are to add value to the economy. Recognizing that Filipinos now face stiffer competition in the global labor market, the Government has decided to embark on a series of substantial reforms in the education sector under the banner of the Enhanced Basic Education Program (K to 12). This includes extending secondary education by two additional years, the Senior High School Program.
Early registration results indicate public Grade 10 completers and returning learners chose General Academic stand whereas private school and registrants from state universities and colleges opted for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand.
